Elena Tyler is a principal character on Felicity, portrayed by Tangi Miller.
Character[]
Elena was raised in one of the poorer neighborhoods outside New York City. She got herself a scholarship to a fancy high school and took advantage of it, graduating valedictorian and earning a full scholarship that brought her to college in Manhattan. The scholarship fell through, but the same determination that got her here is keeping her here. She has a straightforward approach to life that is unusual for some of her new friends, not least Felicity.[1]
Elena is a dedicated, serious and tenacious 18-year-old student who aspires to become a doctor. She is very competitive and always wants to be the best, possibly stemming from feeling she has to succeed in life and can only rely on herself, since her relationship with her father isn't great and her mother died when she was young. Despite having to grow up fast and not wanting to rely on others, or perhaps because of it, Elena is an incredibly loyal friend.
Story[]
FRESHMAN
Elena arrives at UNY wanting to ace every test and become the best possible doctor. Apart from her ambition stemming from having to look out for herself from a young age, she also loves medicine and finds great joy in the medical field. While on this track, Elena befriends Felicity, a fellow pre-med student though not nearly as dedicated to medicine as Elena. Elena's also very adamant at things being fair to her, as she gets annoyed when Felicity wins a free mini-fridge because Noel and Felicity have a thing; Felicity eventually gives Elena the fridge.[2]
Elena seeks out Noel, the resident advisor, on occasion and they eventually become friends, although they mostly argue. Elena's father never let her trick or treat as a kid, so she feels insecure about Halloween and complains to Noel when he decorates the dorms and she gets a witch pinned to her door. Noel asks Elena if she wants to go to the Halloween party at The Loft with him and she says yes. Noel later shows her that he got them costumes as Subway employees, which annoys Elena about the holiday even more, and Elena has to go alone, as Noel never shows up. She does meet Blair at the Halloween party, dressed as the Tin Man, and they spend the night together. Noel goes to her room to apologize and finds her serious attitude hilarious as Elena doesn't want anyone finding out about her personal life. This is the start of her and Noel's friendship.[3]
After Halloween, Elena tries to distance herself from Blair, but he sees through her facade and persists that he would like to get to know her.[4] When Elena's scholarship falls through, she thinks she might have to leave college and ends things with Blair pre-emptively. While commiserating with Felicity, Blair asks Felicity to look at Elena's student records to find out why she's leaving school. When Elena finds out she's angry, but mostly she was ashamed of not being rich which is why she didn't tell anyone. Noel helps Elena feel part of the college world when he intimates that many students need financial help and that she's not alone. Felicity secures Elena another scholarship and she accepts it.[5]

In season 1, Elena has a pretty ponytail. In seasons 2-3, She started wearing braids. In the final season, she has bangs.
